This can easily be avoided in the future by using "cvs export" instead of "cvs co" for doing releases: [...]
Shouldn't be necessary. The problem existed because doc/Makefile.am explicitly listed `CVS' as something to be in the tar file -- I'd guess that someone populated EXTRA_DIST with `echo *' (or ls|sed 's/$/ \/').
