The reference uses Bitstream Vera Sans exclusively as suggested by njh, so this is now a required font for Inkscape. I will now change the tutorial

Vera as well. I'm interested to know how they come up on other computers

The reference appears to be using Arial in my machine. This is not a problem. The tutorial is still using mainly Times New Roman and looks good with this font.
If Bitstream Vera Sans is required will it be packaged with the Win32 build?
Is it possible to simply specify the font-family as 'sans-serif'? If not, is there a way to specify a set of alternative fonts, such as can be done with HTML?
One thing to keep in mind with the tutorials is that if the fonts aren't 100% known on all platforms, then the width of the text may vary, so if you lay out a page with an object to the right of the text, then if a wider than expected font is used, the text may overlap the object. Thus it may be safer to not place graphics inside blocks of text.
