When selecting multiple objects and applying any transformation, they are treated as a whole. For example a rotation would rotation all objects around the center of their combination. I think it might be better to apply the same transformation to each object (and rotate each one around it's own center).
We already discussed that, and agreed that it will be useful as an option, best implemented as a "Apply to each object separately" in the Transform dialog. There's an RFE on that, and now this just needs to be implemented by someone (it should be pretty simple).
Indeed, if you want to treat these objects as a whole you already have the possibility of grouping them (which is only one click), applying the transformation and then, possibly, degroup them if you want to further edit each object.
No, I would strongly object to doing it that way. It's VERY counterintuitive and weird, not to mention contrary to what all other vector editors do.
In addition, consider you want to rotate multiple selected object of 90°, there is at present an "inconsistency" in the transformations: objects are treated as a whole when rotating them with the transform palette but each object is rotated individually when using the "rotate by 90°" buttons of the GUI.
Yes, those buttons act somewhat inconsistently. Their current behavior may sometimes be useful but is rather confusing. Perhaps when we have that option in Transform dialog, we should change these buttons to work on selection as a whole.
