Prove it. I install in locations all over the place. Haven't seen a problem yet. Best I can figure is that problems like this happen when inkscape is run from the build root and not make installed.
I also do install into /usr/local, and the only problem I remember was when automake 1.9 was still new. This took quite some time to get fixed, however, so I'd welcome anything that makes this stuff easier.
