And I am certain that you never run a survey on that :) As a matter of fact both embedding and linking are equally valid in desktop publishing world.
As a user I do have use-cases for both linking and embedding. But it would be nice if it would be clear to me if the image is linked or embedded and when it's linked, how it's linked. I use dropbox a lot to work between different computers and somehow when I move from windows to OS X or linux the link is gone, whilst the linked image is sitting right next to the SVG file.
So for me it doesn't really matter what's the default approach as long as it is clear what is happening.
On a side note, Krzysztof does have a point that many users who are not used to the DTP world are most likely baffled by the linking principle. So a little help there is not a bad idea.
