Of course you are right for complex multiple objects selection. Double click would be safer.

But some conflicts could occur with the double click used to leave a group you opened previously with another double click inside one of its components.

In CAD-software the default way to clear the selection is using Escape key, and it simply cannot be done with mouse (single or double clicks).

In fact I remember when starting to use Inkscape it was a tough point to come over, that the selection disappeared if I miss-clicked. On a positive side, I got really quick at precise mouse moves using Inkscape full time a whole year :)

You are right there is some jump-into-group behaviour when double clicking groups, however, we are talking about empty areas, not jump-to-group (which requires you to actually hit the object).

Hey Olof! :)

However, the Select Tool still uses single clicks to deselect objects.
Is this inconsistency intentional...?

Doesn't it make sense to have double-clicks to deselect objects just as is the case for nodes?

I think it should be double click here too to deselect objects, since there is no way to regain your previous selection (and my selection get pretty big for grouping sometimes).

For consistency as well as functionality, this makes the most sense to me.
