I am far from an expert on Freetype, but from the name of the function, it does indeed seem that it's X11-only. If so, I have no idea how to get font type in a portable way. Can you perhaps get the font file name and figure out from its extension? Just an idea.

Any help from anyone familiar with this will be much appreciated!
