If number of plural forms was always equal to 2, we would never need ngettext. Luckily variety of langauges helps developers keep their mind trained, thus not degrading back to apes :)
Just a small illustration for "%d node(s)" in Russian (transliterated). Watch how word endings change:
1 uzel 2 uzla 7 uzlov
AND
21 uzel 31 uzel 121 uzel 12131331 uzel
etc.
See, you still need that plural from whenever you have a number that ends with 1.
