I'd prefer if it was a separate package. I'm still trying to convince folks to make lib2geom a separate package as well.
It was my understanding that this is the final goal, and will be done once the API is stable enough. I think this hasn't changed in the meanwhile. It would be nice to provide python binding as well from the same source, so they'll stay updated.
