Well.... I think the key is the platforms it's on. Even though 2.8 is about to be "old hat", some existing distros don't even have released versions that are beyond 2.4.x yet.

I'm thinking that we'll probably want to just collect up this kind of info on some page on the Wiki. Then we can at least point people with different distros to the version of Inkscape that's expected to work for them. (leaving behind entire blocks of professional users does give me a bit of concern, though)
