The osxmenu branch is based on trunk - this thread however is about the latest bug-fix release 0.48.5 in the stable series (lp:inkscape/0.48.x).
LiamW's package for 0.48.5 is X11-based, yes, but for OS X users it still offers a lot of improvements compared to the rather dated currently available 0.48.2 package (all bug fixes to the stable series from 0.48.3.1 - 0.48.5, as well as benefits from latest upstream versions of dependencies incl. bug fixes), without major changes in macosx packaging which may introduce risks of new regressions and overall instability.
