No, it's actually very accurate for the intended meaning of the word shape in that context. It's to preserve the shape of an object as best as possible when removing a node.
The problem here is that this is a user preference issue. I think Artistic users will like the new behavior and Technical users will dislike it. I too was a bit alarmed at the difference in behavior the first time I deleted a node on a rectangle. However, when I thought about why it was happening it made perfect sense to me.
Perhaps the suggested solution of a different modifier to delete without preserving shape is necessary. Another option I see is a toggle in preferences for the preferred deletion method with the Ctrl+Alt+Click modifier.
Hopefully bulia will chime in with an opinion.
