I understand that it's valid SVG. But, it's against the spirit of a vectored format.
Ted,
It seems to me that we are slowly drifting to the "right vs. comfortable" type of discussion :) I'm afraid that by being overidealistic we are hurting ourselves.
Honestly, SVG on the Web right is as rare as a Stradivari violin in a country-side music school and it isn't changing much from what I can tell (maybe Jon Cruz as someone who visited SVG Open last year could provide some insight here). There definitely is an interest from GIS users, but I've yet to see a single (online) map where conical gradient fills are used.
For most Inkscape users final file format is either PNG or PDF, and Inkscape does rasterization in both cases.
There's quite a number of features Inkscape does not have simply because SVG does not support them yet and will not support in the foreseeable future. We cannot speed up development of the standard, so we either find workarounds keeping in mind who our users are, or continue to concentrate on tasks that don't require workarounds. We've done a damn good job with the last option, but IMO we could have done much better with both of them.
