What is currently being worked on is a swatch format. Current discussion is that artist would need more than just bare RGB colors, and could extend to palettes and gradients.

As part of supporting that view (that we should follow traditional artist & designer terminology for 'swatch') I went through and researched the other main apps gradients, including a full technical breakdown of GIMP's format and UI.
