Yup. It's going to get much nicer. There are a few things that will tune it up happy-happy, and I think once they're in you'll be quite satisfied with it.
I've left a comment on the persons blog, but if anyone hears from him directly, please point him on to me. I think his feedback could help make the feature even more useful.
The main problem at the moment is time and toolbars. I'm busy chasing stuff down to get the toolbars fixed. However, it turns out that I was very prudent to stop at the point I did, since the fix is going very deep and involved removing the use of SPButton altogether for the toolbars. I'm holding off checking any of that in, though, until it's at least as functional as the current stuff.
