Guides around page
Hi,
a long-standing request was to create guidelines along the page borders of a document, see for example
https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/171228
I just quickly implemented this because I needed it myself. :) Regarding the UI, I figured it would be best as an additional menu entry but couldn't really find an optimal place for it. For now I chose "Edit->Guides around page". Do people find this appropriate or are there better suggestions?
Cheers, Max
BTW, the RFE above suggests to implement snapping to page borders. I, too, think this would be very useful. It shouldn't be hard to do, should it? Maybe an easy exercise for Diederik? :)

No need for any new commands! We already have "object to guides" - when nothing is selected, simply make it act on the page.

But then the function would be hidden forever I think...? Maybe you can place a button in the document properties page tab? (I don't think you need the function 10 times per document, so a menu item might be too much indeed)

Why? Those who need it will be looking for it.
I don't usually quote Adobe Illustrator as an example of usability, but in it, if you select a rect and create crop marks, it creates them around selection, otherwise aroung the page. Makes sense to me.

Yes, that is possible too.

This seems reasonable, but I think it would need to be called something besides "object to guides" at that point.

How about Document properties/page in the Border section add another option "add guides for border". This is where it would seem sensible.

That would be too easy indeed ;-). But seriously, do we still need that when we can have guides at the page borders?

Yes, I would love to be able to snap to the page without worrying about creating guides.

This has been implemented as of rev. 17859. Please enable "snap to page border" in the snap tab of the document properties dialog and have fun!
And of course: if you encounter any bugs, then please report those...

It all sounds like we just need to create a proper guides management dialog (inside Document Properties as an option) :-)

See that white space in the guides tab? I intended a list of guides there, so you can select one to delete/modify it, etc.
