Text import extension does not load in Ubuntu

Hi everyone,
I'm helping to maintain the Ubuntu package of Inkscape. I mentioned in bug #479944 that the text import extension does not load in Ubuntu. I'd be grateful if anyone can offer any extra debugging assistance with this - I can't see any obvious reason why the extension does not load. As I mentioned in comment #7, extension-errors.log doesn't report any problems.
Thanks,
Alex

(forgot to reply-all - posting again)
I am able to import text files to Inkscape 0.47 in Ubuntu 10.04 after installing libsvg-perl.
However Inkscape 0.48 (from tarball) does not offer to import .txt files, and if I change the selector to "all files" and try anyway it fails to import. Nothing relevant in the extension-errors.log (shouldn't this log have a timestamp or something at the beginning?).
Adding a dependency on libsvg-perl might fix the original bug as reported - but I'm not sure what's up with 0.48. Could be I built something wrong. If it's not loading an extension shouldn't it be recorded in the log though? Strange - I'm still poking around....
