Re: [Inkscape-devel] SoC 3D box tool - website updated

Certainly. But that's candy for later when the core tool tool is thoroughly implemented, although it should of course be considered during the design phase.
If adding a box creates new VPs, you either need the ability to 'snap' VPs together, or an additional way to create boxes using exitsing VPs.
Yep. That's the overall plan.
BTW, have a look at http://www.khulsey.com/demo_howto_car.html I have to wonder if using a 3d app wouldn't be more efficient, but this at least impressive and maybe inspiring :)
Thanks for the link! This really looks like it can give suggestions. I'll study it in detail later.

Damn - that's intense stuff. I wonder what an illustrator would earn for a drawing like that. Amazing.

I think more amazing is people's sheer willingness to do all this insane work in what amounts to hardly adequate tools. By this I refer not only to the lack of any 3D capabilities in Illustrator (all the perspective lines are drawn by hand, etc.) but also to the fact that "final coloring is done in Photoshop", essentially freezing the image and making it uneditable.
And yes, I would charge a lot for this work indeed if I had to, for example, create a gear with such pain and hardship as described at http://www.khulsey.com/illustration_tutorial_gears.html. Here's my favorite bit: it's what AI users have to suffer through when they need to do something as simple as Ctrl+D in Inkscape:
"...select the first tooth and using both the Command and Option keys (cursor becomes double arrow) hit the "Nudge" or "Arrow" key once to the left. This will "Copy and Paste" a duplicate of your selection. Use the "Nudge" or "Arrow" key again to move it back to the right, placing it directly over the original."
Adobe Illustrator never ceases to amaze me.

Heh :) I have never used it, but I'll take your word. Freehand, OTOH, was an amazing app. I wonder if Adobe has killed it off.

I wonder if Adobe has killed it off.
Yup. :( They're now pushing Illustrator + InDesign to do what Freehand used to do in one application.
That's really sad. It just makes me so much more aware of why open-source is so important. Imagine all the hard work and time that went into making Freehand as downright brilliant as it was - and now throw it all away. Forever.

Actually, it was the buyout of Macromedia by Adobe that made me make the switch to using, and eventually helping out with the development of, open source graphics tools. I had a lot of Freehand documents that I had built for my freelance clients that I decided right then and there to convert to more future-proofed formats like SVG and the OASIS formats. I'm much happier having made the switch. :)

Sorry for the OT drift :)

Yeah - that scared me. Now there's only one (and Corel). Shades of M$ville creeping into the design community.
I wish there were open alternatives to Flash, Director and Dreamweaver (I know there are attempts, but none come close). Macromedia was doing good stuff for a while. I never knew about open source and open formats back then, and I suspect a lot of designers now also have no clue just how time-locked their design files are.

This guy needs to study Illustrator more, there a WAY better technique to achieve this. It's called paste over/under.

It's not really any better - it also uses two keyboard shortcuts (instead of one in Inkscape) and the same number of total keypresses (4). Besides, it loses your previous clipboard contents, which may be the reason why "this guy" is not using it.
