The other day, i decided to lock an object using the "lock" checkbox in the properties dialog box, and when i wanted to edit this object again, the only way i could find to unlock it was to edit the XML using the XML editor.
This got me thinking, how could an easier way be implented? microUgly and i were throwing around some ideas at http://inkscapeforum.com/ and we thought, why not be able to change these properties of objects in the layers dialog box? anyhoo, the moral to my rambilings is that i did a simple mockup of how this may work: please tell me what you think...

Looks great. Would there be a part of the window that shows an individual layer's properties when one is selected in the tree?

Are layers blending modes planned too? If yes, they have to be on the mockup ;-)

Actually, I believe that the blending modes are going to be going into the fill & stroke dialog or a standalone filters dialog. Either way, since the objects dialog will select layers the same as other objects, expect it to work the same way that you currently apply filters/colors to objects. :)

What I've asked Nick to do is to factor out the blend/filter/blur/opacity metawidget, and put it in both the fill+stroke and the layers dialog. I think that should make everyone happy.

Or, maybe, make a separate Filters palette?

We'll have that for detailed editing of filters. The metawidget I proposed to Nick just adds a "blend" dropdown to what's already at the bottom of the fill & stroke dialog.
Blend mode: [ Normal v ]
Blur,%: ---------------||---- [ 80]
Master Opacity,%: -------------------|| [100]
If the special blend mode "Filter", is selected, you get:
Blend mode: [ Filter v ]
[ #filter123 v ] [Edit...]
Master Opacity,%: -------------------|| [100]
The "Edit" button invokes the filter palette/dialog.

Seems like it's wasted space if you have both the Layer and the Fill & Stroke dialogs open all the time like I tend to. Then again, we don't have the above discussed objects dialog either, so no real complaints here. ;) One Q, can that widget set be collapsible? As in little arrow that hides/shows that part of the dialog?
Either way, I do want to request that one day when we have the object dialog that those widgets be omitted from it for the sake of saving screen real estate and also the "expected" behavior I mentioned in my last post. What are your thoughts on these mental?

But they do different things, right? The currently selected object isn't the currently selected layer.

Agreed that they do different things, but there's no comparison for how often I apply filters to objects rather than layers (and currently get by with selecting the layer in the XML editor to achieve it). So it's still just wasted real estate for me because it would be used so infrequently and it's why I suggested that the meta-widget be collapsible if possible.
For note, I only have single head displays and while they can go 1600x1200 it's not practical because of the actual size of the display and the distance I sit from them. So, I need all the screen area I can get. ;)

Well, in that case fill'n'stroke dialog should stay in _easily visible_ sync with the proposed palette.
