Cool :-) I've been thinking about making such a thing in outline mode (so the dashed line would be permanent in outline mode).

Could clones be drawn in outline mode as the union of the paths in the original, rather than each path separately outlined? This is the clip region provided by the clone. It would visually distinguish the clone from the original.
