Wiki Spam, more security. time for accounts yet?
The current anti spam system doesn't seem to be effective anymore and it is quite annoying to use, at least with a login system I only have to worry about it once and then save the settings in my browser. (The notSPAM block must be typed every time and it is quite frustrating even the option to use logins and avoid having to confirm everything each time woudl be a big help).
I cleared some SPAM links from the main wiki page inkscape-devel@lists.sourceforge.net and then noticed the sneaky beggars had added blocks of hidden links which do not actually show up on the page.
Even if you decide logins are too much of a restriction, I do hope the security can be cranked up some other way.
Sincerely
Alan Horkan http://advogato.org/person/AlanHorkan/

The most comfortable would be if the maintainer would get the diffs per mail and, by simply replying in the mailreader, could reject changes.
If we had that, I would volunteer for a maintenance period.

With the new MediaWiki, it's possible to set up administrative level accounts, with added powers like locking pages, banning user accounts, mass reversion, and so on. With UseModWiki this was sort of possible but it was rather limited. Anyway, when the new system is set up, you guys can get admin accounts to help with spam blocking. However I think if you implement the security measures I posted, spam should pretty much go away entirely (at least, until the spammers evolve a few more levels).

I've stopped 99% of the Scribus Wiki with the SpamBlacklist extension. Since putting it in there has only been one entry.

Who'd like to work on this? I can explain exactly what needs to be done. I don't really have the time to handle it myself at the moment, but can provide lots of hand holding.
Basically what needs done is to install MediaWiki on our SF account (pretty easy), migrate our existing content out of UseModWiki into it, and then implement a series of Wiki spam protection measures I've documented here: http://bryceharrington.org/blosxom.cgi/2005/11/16#wikispam

wiki.inkscape.org is on freedesktop.org and I have mediawiki ready to go. All I need to do is move to a workable location, then maybe aaron you could help port the old wiki to the new one, then add redirects for the old pages.
Cool? Shall I move forward?

Yeah, ACSpike did a bunch of work to get it installed and running. I think he got up to the point of running the converter script, and could probably use a hand with that. You and he should try to get together on irc today. :-)

Btw, you can reuse my SpamBlockList setup from either CREATE's or OpenFontLibrary's project (it's synced between them), which has both mediawiki's list and entries added by me.

Some of the spam is coming in from google having links to the edit page, videlicet:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&c2coff=1&safe=off&q=+...
Something could be done with robots.txt or the 'referer' header?
