Re: [Inkscape-devel] our logo in EPS
May I ask why EPS? Even the position of its creator is to move forward to PDF. I usually find myself trying to import/export proprietary formats but if I send the "wrong" format to my providers they ask me to export it again in their preferred format. I wonder why we have to worry about this and not them, since we can do PDF or even SVG (which doesn't seem to be very well supported by some commercial and people can't complain, by the way).
I know saying this won't solve anything and it's not very helpful, just my two cents.

Because such was the request

Has someone been able to export a good PDF? If so, please send it to me.

Haven't tried - attached is a vector-only EPS version (from 'share/icons/inkscape.svg' with edited gradient stop colors, but no drop-shadow), exported to EPS with Inkscape 0.48. Still testing how to get a smooth drop-shadow in vector, without rasterization and as close as possible to the original.

Lots of shape interpolation should get it decent.

Then it might be cheaper (in terms of file size) to just rasterize it.

An earlier test with the rasterized shadow... the bitmap isn't fully covering the background - embedding it e.g. in OOo above a colored background doesn't look great ;) - the logo itself is still vector.

... and one with interpolated fills of offset paths (halo). A bit too dark, and the shading is too linear compared to the Gaussian blur.
File size could be optimized a bit by cutting the offset shapes down to the visible parts only (fewer nodes).

About the SVG files: I removed the internal stylesheet and class attributes from the original SVG file. The gradients - while still at the same position - are no longer named and shared, and the drop shadow filter was redone (Inkscape 0.48 didn't render the old one).

About the EPS export from Inkscape: the 'trick' to avoid rasterization when using fully opaque gradients: choose language level 2 instead of default level 3 in the EPS export dialog: as long as none of the objects in the file has reduced opacity, the resulting EPS file will not be rasterized and be written as
%%LanguageLevel: 3
