Inkscape 0.92pre4 released

The 0.92pre4 source package has been released and can be downloaded from Launchpad:
https://launchpad.net/inkscape/0.92.x/0.92pre4
I tried to upload it to the inkscape.org website, but kept getting a server error. Hopefully Martin can investigate and get the source package properly uploaded there too. :-)
This pre-release incorporates bugfixes for the recently added mesh gradient feature, tidies up build options, adds the official about screen, and includes numerous backports and translation updates.
From what I can see, the reaction to the mesh gradient feature has been
quite positive, and particularly with the serious attention given to fixing issues that have been raised, there seems to be little reason not to ship it in our final release. I remain open to feedback to the contrary, but at this time I suggest we proceed under the assumption that it will be part of the release. Meanwhile, please do try the feature out and help us advocate for its adoption by web browsers and other SVG using applications.
Please try to avoid making any further changes on the 0.92.x tree - consider it in final freeze before release. The one exception being translations - the mesh gradient changes were allowed to break string freeze, so due to that we'll be giving permission to translators for breaking this final freeze. Ideally, I'd like to see no other changes to the 0.92.x branch prior to release; so if you have a change you would like to see included, please run any and all changes by me first (with justification) before landing them.
Packagers are encouraged to prepare binary packages for the platforms we support.
Thanks, Bryce

Thanks for that release! I'll try to test it soon and perhaps lay the foundation for upgrading the Mageia Linux package to it.

Additional: Can anyone provide a screenshot of some nice use of a gradient mesh? We could use some for the release notes, news article and for the Inkscape website's screenshot section.
Please licence as CC-By-SA or Public Domain. As website upload is currently defunct, if the file size is too large for this list, please either use a bug report at https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape-web, the Wiki (if you've got access) or a file hosting site for uploading.
Thank you!

Thanks everyone for giving attention to the package. Hopefully packagers can get builds up in the next day or two.
It sounds like we might benefit from having one last release candidate, in, say, a week's time. The goal would be for that pre5 package to be essentially identical to what we'll be releasing - so ideally no changes should be introduced between pre5 and release. Since that puts us smack in the middle of holidays, I think we'll need to schedule the actual release for after the start of the new year.
Announcement writing work is now our top priority. Maren has been working on our plans, please take a look:
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/AnnouncePlanning092
Writers are needed! If you're good at stringing words together and looking for an important way to help promote Inkscape, now's your chance.
Basically, we need to describe what's in 0.92 that users can look forward to, and help motivate them to download the program. We need evocative descriptions for the coolest new features. We want to excite them about what can be done with the program. And most importantly we want to make folks feel welcome to join in our community and participate in improving Inkscape. I'd love to see a surge in new faces contributing to our project in 2017.
Maren, perhaps you could explain how people could best apply their talents here (i.e. where is help needed the most?)
Thanks! Bryce

Hello Bryce,
on inkscape.org the file has a strange name: inkscape-0.92pre4.tar_Bv5Tl5T.bz2 That leads to be not a tar file .?!
I don't know if that was supposed tobe like this.

Adib, that's because Bryce and I uploaded the same file twice... The second file uploaded with the same filename gets a random suffix.
After renaming, it should be valid.
Not sure how to fix this other than by trying to avoid concurrent uploads (I'll better keep my fingers out of it...) or by asking Martin to rename the file on disk.

Additional: I've created a bug report for inkscape-web, to see if it's possible to insert that random part before the first ".". However, the renaming seems to be a django standard functionality, so could probably better be fixed there...

If the file you uploaded is the same one I did (i.e. the gpg sig checks out), then if renaming is too tricky/timeconsuming, then just make the download page link to the file you uploaded.

I suppose it's probably worth thinking about how to make the website handle it better (main worry I guess would be an attacker pre-uploading a file with the name we'll be using for a future release), but for now yeah we can just adopt that as practice. Also we know now to doublecheck the link in case this happens again.

There's a way to replace the specific functionality that does the rename and some projects opt for doing a directory instead. considering the large number of files, I think a random prefix directory might be a good idea anyway. Maybe a hash of the current time of the day (but not date) that way you'd have to hit the 'exact' time in seconds (or ms) of the previous uploaded file and we could just advance the time by a second until a slot is valid.
I should have commented this to the bug report. Sorry!

Hi all
Windows packages for 0.92pre4 are up, see [1].
For this pre-release the artwork in the MSI and EXE installers was updated with the about screen image by artelnjeru01 (you can have a look at it at [2]), thanks to Adib who did most of the adjustments!
