SVG, the file format used by Inkscape is a standard defined by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C): http://www.w3.org/standards/techs/svg
Using a standard file format is one of Inkscape's main strengths.

I would advise you *against* doing that, it make no sense to reinvent the wheel and create yet-another-file-format only you application can understand. Use instead an existing standard, like Open Document and enable interoperability with the rest of the world.

Inkscape is based on SVG (mostly version 1.1): http://www.w3.org/TR/SVG11/

In the context of Inkscape and SVG the quickest road to supporting pages would probably be to use the upcoming SVG 1.2: http://www.w3.org/TR/SVGPrintPrimer12/ http://www.w3.org/TR/SVGPrint12/
