no color swatch in the palette:
Thanks for adding it! Two comments:
- Can we please make the cross black, not red? The red is too bright and distracting.
- Dragging this swatch onto canvas objects does not work, sets them to black instead.

I disagree. Red is just fine. If it's good enough for every other vector drawing app out there it's good for Inkscape.
I also think the red is distracting. While it got my attention to notice the new feature, it screams at me every time I look at that corner of the screen, and it actually is quite distracting. It looks like something is wrong there, and I have to devote attention to it and figure out that it's not wrong each time.
Even if it were a much darker shade of red it would still be better.

That argument's full of holes :)

Makes me wonder if everybody is really fine with the fact that size of swatch elements is different every time you pick a different palette :) And that "no swatch" is not a square usually :)

In Xara Xtreme, it is not red, though not quite a cross either - more like a piece of a black grid at 45 deg.
If you vote to leave it red, then please at least make the lines thinner :)
I second this. I am a long time Xara user and it should be better without cross.

I've just updated the cross to be thinner and with a darker red tone. Tell me what you think, guys. You will need to make install

Much better, but black would be still better IMHO :) Its being "almost black but not quite" is a bit annoying.

I'll probably take a look at this. There are a few things about dragging color we want to address uniformly. Also, the icon generation itself is probably in need of relocating - that, at least, I can take care of.

OK. I've got this one almost done... or at least a work-around for now. Just have to change the drag source to only offer a magic no-color constant when the source swatch is the special one.
