Hey all,
I just got the rejection letter from Google. I wanted to let you guys know that I will definitely try to make an effort and contribute a bit to the community anyway, but I do take this as a bit of a sign - it's the gods telling me I should work on my thesis as much as I can this summer ;) Hopefully I can contribute something to the conversation on SVG Fonts (assuming Felipe was accepted, but I think that's a safe assumption), and I know there are a good number of text bugs that might be a good place for me to spend short bursts of time.
Congrats to all those accepted, and I hope everyone has a fantastic summer!
Gail
Hello
I also got the rejection word. I will now focus on a summer job and if I am able, I'll try to submit part or whole of the project idea :)
Gongratulations to the accepted ones and thanks for the opportunity. Everybody have a good summer!
Regards Vangelis Katsikaros

Gail and Vangelis,
It's a pity that we had that small amount of slots this year, because you (and other people who submitted applications) really really deserve them. We'll be happy having you around anyway ;-)
Alexandre
Thanks Alex, I was kind of hoping somebody would say something like that.:)

It's true! As happy as I was to learn that my project was accepted, it made me sad to see the two of yours and other great ideas rejected because I know for sure that they would have been very valuable improvements for Inkscape. I'm certain that the rest of the Inkscape community feels the same. And I'd be glad to see you around in summer, whether you manage to work on your intended projects or not.
Best wishes, Max

I really hope people can understand that these students and projects were not /rejected/ by any means. As Alexandre had said, we had a limited number of SoC spots available and unfortunately it was far less than any of us had hoped for. Honestly, we would have loved for all qualified and motivated applicants to be able to participate.
So, again... please know that people were not rejected. That term has a specific negative connotation which definitely doesn't apply here. We do hope that people will still want to work with the inkscape community in the future and that there are no negative feelings toward the project due to something out of our control. We look forward to seeing you around for a long time to come. :)
Cheers, Josh

Absolutey true. Sorry for my inadequate choice of wording. What you wrote was exactly what I was trying to say, but obviously didn't. I agree that not being able to select the projects is something very different from rejecting them, and all I wanted to say is that I found it very unfortunate that not all of them could be accepted (as they surely would have deserved).
Best, Max
