Adding a GSoc 10th proposal to "implement skia rendering in inkscape." it's cited here https://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php?title=Projects#Renderer_improvement... but not here https://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Google_Summer_of_Code
Cairo renderer (was a 2010 GSoC proposal) but now skia is the most advanced renderer used in Chromium, Flutter, ... It also supports multithreading and many backends (CPU with simd, OpenGL, vulkan, ...) LibreOffice developers are doing the transition: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=Trying-LibreOffice-V... Me and many users have faced and reported slowness with larges svgs or when there are many files opened.
If you think it's not the right place to request a feature proposal, then you can direct me to the right place. I am a long time inkscape user for more than a decade but I am not very used to its development. As a comparaison, Godot has a git repository and accepts proposals conforming to a defined set of rules. https://github.com/godotengine/godot-proposals/ People can suggest features, they get discussed and picked by developers if they show are worthy to be implemented.
Kind regards,
Kind Regards
Maren

Hi Ikbel,
thank you for your explanations.
I think that including something in the official GSOC projects list would take confirmation by at least a few core developers.
This is especially important as the renderer Inkscape will use in the future should not be decided by a single person, who isn't familiar with the internals of the project yet, both for code and culture, but by the collective of developers who will have to work with it in the future.
I'm certain (and I have read) that you have already investigated this, but others on the project whom this concerns probably did not have a chance to do so yet.
A project like this would also require someone to mentor the student, and to possibly also invest some of their own programming time into any change, else it would not make much sense to suggest it for working on by a student (it's also a huge and hard project, so multiple hands will definitely be needed).
So what I would suggest is that you write up your suggestion on a separate Wiki page, and then ask for developers' feedback on the mailing list. Note that it may be that any decisions about this will not take place before the release of Inkscape 1.0, and that people will prefer to talk about it in person during the Hackfest in Rennes (I don't know that).
Please stay patient, and help people out with the knowledge you have gathered, but give them time to investigate and to come up with a decision that is supported by a majority of the people involved. It seems there are multiple options available, and figuring out which one is the best will take time.
That said, if you want to make this a separate Wiki page, please send me a private email with your:
- email address that you want to use - user name that you want to use (must start with a capital letter)
Putting the info into an issue on GitLab would be another good option.
The most important thing will be to ask for more feedback on the mailing list, no matter where you decide to put the info.
Thanks!
Kind Regards Maren
