Collaboration with Inkscape has been suggested before and it
certainly makes a lot of sense, though I don't think merging the
programs is a good idea.

Would you like to share your reasons why not?

One reason is that we must stay within SVG, which does not have very good text support. So a DTP app can hardly be embedded into Inkscape. The other way round (embedding SVG into a DTP format and thus Inkscape into a DTP app) seems more feasible.
