Inkscape 0.43 mini-status
I *believe* that we're in hard freeze and about set to do a Pre1.
Translators should look into the file attached to RFE 1247694 "No ((parenthesis)) in menu labels.", and see if it should be applied or not.
I think we've got a pending item still with Scislac updating the Calligraphy tutorial.
There are a few translation patches that still need to be applied. I should be able to get to those tonight.

FWIW, the direct link is http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1247694&gro... and I voted for applying it.
Cheers, Colin

Me also.

Are we ready to press on ahead with the 0.43 release? I've noticed a bit of a lull this last week; does this indicate it's stable enough now?
Ted, would you be able to put out another pre-release this weekend?
Jon and Peter, are there any major issues you're still tracking? At this point it might be worth considering just listing them as known issues and cutting the release. I think folks are getting itchy to get back into devel mode, so it'd be great to get things wrapped up with 0.43.

Looks like it, though a crash was reported yesterday, assigned to Mental (in layer selector).
Other than that I'm really concerned by the lack of activity in screenshots. We can't roll out a release without screenshots.

Okay, that sounds important but not a show stopper. Let's press on anyway, and hopefully it can get fixed in time; if not, it should at least be listed as a known issue.

I think we could roll out a release without screenshots, but I agree it would be better if we had them. Can you list the things that should be shown in the screenshots? I'm not very artistic but will take care of making them if no one else can.

Hi,
In updating my book for 0.43, I have the following comments, in rough order of importance for 0.43 release:
Blur Edge effect doesn't work. Produces multiple copies of original but doesn't scale or shift them.
Using the Enter key when changing the Font size in the Text and Font dialog opens the drop down menu. The size of the text in the preview box no longer changes immediately (or even sometimes after an "Apply").
Incorrect bounding box calculation for arrow markers. The tip of the arrow is not included.
Connector and Gradient tools should be swapped in tool bar. The Gradient tool belongs next to the Dropper as both affect the color of an object.
Transform dialog: "Move" entries should default to zero. The most common task is to move an object in either the horizontal or vertical directions.
The Document Preference custom canvas size default unit is "pt" but "px" is used most other places in Inkscape.
The terms "Page" and "Canvas" are used inconsistently for the drawing size: Page: View menu Export bitmap dialog Alignment dialog Canvas: Document preferences dialog
New menu organization should be used.
Tooltips should still work for grayed out items.
Tooltip for Ellipse: Create circles, ellipses, and arcs. Should be: Create ellipses, circles, and arcs. (Generic -> Specific, like for Rectangle Tool)

Please whoever authored it, or is willing to fix it, step up. Otherwise we'll have to remove this one.

Yes, please file a bug
Incorrect bounding box calculation for arrow markers. The tip of the arrow is not included.
This is a more general known bug: sharp miters are not in the bbox. A workaround is to rework the standard markers (share/markers/markers.svg) so that they don't use stroke at all, only filled shapes. Any volunteers?

Agree, fixed
Transform dialog: "Move" entries should default to zero. The most common task is to move an object in either the horizontal or vertical directions.
I already have a fix for that in my copy. Will be committed after 0.43 because it's part of a big rework of that dialog.
The Document Preference custom canvas size default unit is "pt" but "px" is used most other places in Inkscape.
Known bug, is in tracker I think
The terms "Page" and "Canvas" are used inconsistently for the drawing size: Page: View menu Export bitmap dialog Alignment dialog Canvas: Document preferences dialog
Good point, I think we should use Page throughout. I'll fix that but not now because we're in a strings freeze. You may file a bug so we don't forget about it.
New menu organization should be used.
I'll get to that after 0.43 also.
Tooltips should still work for grayed out items.
That's not our bug, it's GTK behavior.
Tooltip for Ellipse: Create circles, ellipses, and arcs. Should be: Create ellipses, circles, and arcs. (Generic -> Specific, like for Rectangle Tool)
Agree, will fix, but not now because of the strings freeze. Again, file a bug so we don't forget about it.
Thanks for a detailed review :)

Nope. Blur Edge works fine. Please do not remove it.
In its current state it, like the grid snapping behavior, is tuned for small objects or zoomed in work. If desired increase the default value for "Blur Width" and raise the maximum allowed value. But please don't remove something cool like this.

What value would be good? I didn't realize it was too restrictive. Should the value be in some other unit (percentage)?

Actually it is less a matter of the max and more a matter of the default being set to 1.0 user unit. At standard zoom in default.svg this is too small a blur on normal size objects to be seen, giving people the impression it doesn't work. Rasing the max for both parameters to 1000 would be much less restrictive, but I don't know what is best. I think the most important thing is to raise the default. 50 is probably a fine default value for both parameters.

Hi,
The Blur Edge effect does work! It was operator error. I was trying to blur a square. The effect only works on paths.
How easy would it be to include a Convert-to-path command in the effect?

Ah, ok. I see. It must be that the effect changes the path data, but inkscape overwrites it by calculating path data from the shape's parameters. I have the same problem with the python effects, but something could probably be done about this with an internal effect. And the shape doesn't need to be converted to path, only the copies.

Well, it tries. It calls the same function that the verb uses to change a selection to a path, and it does add the element to the selection before calling the command. I know there is something I'm doing wrong there... if anyone has ideas I'd love to know them -- I think that would make Blur Edge a ton more useful. Plus, it would be a good thing to know for other effects authors.

Frankly, I did not try it myself, but I think I heard a complaint about it not working before, which is why I wrote what I wrote. Good to hear it actually works :)

I've listed it several times here. Even specific persons have volunteered to do specific ones, but there was nothing I could upload so far. I will post the list again, later today.

I think you'd probably want more than one example in this... but it's a start. Let me know if this is along the lines of what you were thinking. http://scislac.com/inkscape/node-drag.png
I think that I should do another pure node dragging example on that, as well as a couple showing the adding a node anywhere on path. (covering both functions a couple times in one shot)
Would that be good?

Excellent, thanks! And yes, if you add some more examples on the same shot, it will be even better.

Plus, there are currently 3 patches in the tracker that release maintainers must resolve one way or the other, plus some interface and tutorial translations to commit (Scislac).
