We started to convert Inkscape tutorials into DocBook, with SVG and HTML (and potentially other formats) generated automatically by XSLT stylesheets. The Basic tutorial in English was the first to be converted; here it is in HTML:
http://inkscape.org/doc/basic/tutorial-basic.html
(obviously there's no interactivity in HTML, but at least it's now printable).
If you want to help, pick your favorite tutorial (drop a note to the devel list first, to make sure it's not yet taken), check out the doc-docbook module from our CVS and follow the instructions in the file README to convert it into DocBook and extract illustrations as separate SVG files. This is simple work but it will be great help to the project, since it will make much easier to update tutorials, translate them into other languages, and write new ones.
Oh, and if you want to edit or translate or tutorial, please wait until it's converted and work with the DocBook version. (Better yet, convert it yourself :)

And if you can't do that, here's a zip file of the same:
http://inkscape.org/doc/doc-xslt.zip
This is a noble goal. And it looks simple enough for me. So if there are no objections (in the next few minutes :) ), I will start on the shapes tutorial.

Excellent, thanks. Send it to me when ready.
There's one non-standard illustration there, the one with huge randomized star. You'll have to cut it to fit the format (that big star will become path, but that's OK). Also don't forget to unlock all layers so that nothing is lost when you copy/paste illustrations into separate files; those objects which were locked in the original need to remain locked, but in the separate illustration files please use individual object lock (via the Object Properties) instead of layer lock.
And maybe after that, you can write a new tutorial on using Extensions :) (Well, after the worst problems with the extensions system are solved, anyway.)
Scislac: Please note that Shapes is taken.

What??? Now that sounds more complicated than I thought. I'll see if I can figure it out. You'll hear my questions if I have any.

Don't worry, it's easy :) You just copy and paste illustrations into separate files, that's all (in addition to creating DocBook, that is). Small problems can be fixed later.

Ok, you're right. This is easy. I'm ashamed to say that I've never worked with layers or locking in Inkscape before. I think I have it figured out now.
In figure 16 (rounded stars) the numbers were part of the unlocked graphics layer. I think they should be locked for consistency, no?
I took a look at the svg file. Those tspans are brutal. Is there a simple way to extract all the text in the text layer?

Yes

I think the easiest way is just select a text object, Ctrt+C, Ctrl+V in your text editor, then add the <para>, <keycap> etc markup by hand.
One wee question: can a stylesheet be applied to the HTML? I understand that isn't the priority right now, but when it's all converted and ready, it would be nice to make the thing look a little bit more... pretty ; ).

Just make a CSS and send it to me, I'll use it.

Just FYI, I'm working on this.

Thanks to Aaron Spike, we now have two more tutorials converted:
file:///home/d/ink/doc-docbook/shapes/tutorial-shapes.html file:///home/d/ink/doc-docbook/tracing/tutorial-tracing.html
Their sources and SVG renditions are in CVS now.
Ishmal: will you please update the Tracing tutorial with all the new tracing modes and tips?
Also: the http://inkscape.org/doc/index.php page says the manpage is updated daily, yet it doesn't have my updates of several days ago. Who's responsible for it?
