It is likely that this will be the last prerelease for Inkscape 0.43. If packagers can make packages to ensure the completeness of the package, and if users could make sure it is stable, we'll hopefully be ready to release 0.43! Please submit comments quickly, this prerelease will be a short lived one.

That is the correct behaviour it is writeonly ;-)
I put that file on the filearea of inkscape. But I noticed that there are some dmg that have ~24MB and some ~14MB. As I do not have a Mac I can not say what is ok and what not. Tn theory there should be no difference. Did you stripped the files in the dmg ?
Thanks anyway for the submission :-)

There were a couple of problems with this package: - It was missing all the translation files. This is probably due to a bug in your version of gcc which causes the configure test for a valid "dgettext" function to fail, even though it exists on OS X. (I've had the same problem. A workaround is to set "ac_cv_lib_intl_dgettext=yes" - It did not have the correct paths set inside the executable, which causes problems like some of the icons not displaying in some cases. This is because when builing the OS X package, Inkscape should be configured with the "--enable-osxapp" option. I've documented this in the OS X package build script as well as in the wiki instructions.
I've uploaded and released an updated OS X package for pre2.
Cheers, Michael

It looks like those modifications weren't put on to the RELEASE_0_43 branch, only HEAD. Is that what you intended?
The modifications in question need to be made manually by the packager when they are building inkscape, before running the packaging script.
I've also just commited a change to the OS X packaging script, but this doesn't need to be added to the release branch. In that change I also added a comment that mentions the requirement of running configure with "--enable-osxapp" though I don't think its worth added this comment to the release branch since its on the wiki instructions now and there's really just myself and JiHo building these packages.
Cheers, Michael

OK. I tested the package but as my system is in english I did not remarked this. My version of gcc is gcc 3.3 from os X on Tiger. How can I check if the nightlies I built have the same problem? And then how to I set "ac_cv_lib_intl_dgettext=yes"? is it in the makefile? as an environment variable? maybe it should be in the wiki somewhere (like in troubleshooting section)?
About package size: my packages are 24.8 MB and the resulting inkscape is 80 MB and I am apparently missing some files. Yours are 14 MB and resulting Inkscape is 32 MB and is complete. what am I doing wrong???

I wasn't aware of the option sorry. Once again all seemed fine to me but I guess it is because I only tested it on my system. By the way, with previous builds (the only I did not do myself) I remarked that the tutorials were not accessible. Is it part of the same problem? can you access tutorials in my builds? I can in the pre2-2 I downloaded (I assume it is yours). As to the wiki I'll rather put the option directly next to configure because the way it is now will probably lead people to configure make and make install before seeing it and they will have to redo the whole thing. In addition I guess that everybody compiling on os X will probably want his bundle.

Downloaded and testing it a little. everything seems fine to me.
Additional note about python: As I understand it, python is shipped with mac os X, even without the developers packaged installed. does somebody knows if pyXML is somewhere inside this? fink apparently has a package pyxml for different versions of python but it requires to install python from fink which is a waste of space and compile time. in addition, know that there is an Inkscape package it would be great to be able to use it completely without fink. My idea behind this is that, as effects are enabled by default now, as most of them require pyxml, as mac os X has python and as mac users are lazy and want ready to use stuff, would it be possible to use os x python, or provide them with a package or... whatever.

The nightlies have the problem if they are missing the Inkscape.app/Contents/Resources/locale directory or it is empty.

You can just set it as an environment variable, prior to running configure. I'll add a comment about this soon.

You're not doing anything wrong. It just that mine are stripped, and yours are not (i.e., the libraries still include all the debugging information).

Yes, this would be the cause of the tutorials not being accessible. No, I couldn't access them in your build.

Sure, feel free to change this. But also note that anyone building on OS X who is not planning to make bundles (i.e., anyone doing Inkscape development) won't want to use this option.

I haven't looked at python or getting the effects working without fink. Please feel free explore what needs to be done to get this working nicely.

ok thank you. I'll check but know you have given me the hint of the compile option it should be ok.

ok then... how do I strip them down? ;-) I think it will be better to have small packages, especially for the nighlies because they are downloaded directly from inkscape website and not through sourceforge download manager. then, if people encounter issues it will be easy to provide them with debugging enabled builds.
Just give the packaging script the '-s' option: ./osx-app.sh -s ...

So I looked at this rapidly and it appears that pyxml isn't including in os x python. the official mac os x scripting page is even taking this as an example of possible downloaded addition. So I downloaded the package and there is a compiling problem which is easily solved by a environment variable export. I added all this to the wiki page about compiling inkscape for os X. But it might not be the best place to put it... I made a link to there from the enabling effects page though. But I don't have a clue about what will happen if we make a package of this. There are compiled C extensions so I don't know to what extend they would work if distributed in a binary form. It appears nonetheless that everything is in: /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.3/lib/ python2.3/site-packages/_xmlplus/ so I made a dmg of it which is here: http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/pyXML.dmg can somebody without pyXML try this? or michael can you uninstall your pyxml from fink (temporarily at least) and try this. Afterwards reinstalling the one from fink shouldn't be to long because it should keep a deb of it I guess. Thanks in advance.

I've added these to EXTRA_DIST, so they should be in any future tarballs. (Not that I'm certain that they should be there; I've sent mjw all the arguments I know of for & against, requesting his comment.)

Thanks Peters for adding the packaging files. Could you pls add also /packaging/win32/header.bmp . BTW is there a way to add a complete subdir to makefile.am ?
Thx again,

Done.

Usually you don't want to do that: you usually want to exclude the CVS directory and .cvsignore file, for example. So instead you'd insert the output of find thedir -type f|sort into Makefile.am.

We decided it makes sense for them to be included in the tarballs.
