Xara source released

Thanks for the heads up John :)

Hi,
I just test drove the XaraXL 0.3 release and watched the Xara movies on their website. One feature that really stuck out that Inkscape is missing is the ability to feather an arbitrary shape. I assume that this will come to Inkscape when Inkscape supports SVG filters. Which leads to the question, what is the status of SVG filter support?
BTW, both Opera 9 Preview and Firefox trunk (Gecko 1.9a1) have support (incomplete) for SVG filters.

Last I knew of any discussion was Bulia making a request on the list for assistance with at least the gaussian blur one and then my subsequent news post on the homepage reiterating his request... neither of which seemed to have garnered much response. There has been talk that we'll inherit filters when and if we switch to Cairo, but there's not been any performance comparisons recently that I know of which has been a concern of Bulia's, and no one has stated an interest in spearheading that switch anyway.

Cairo does only rendering. We still need to write our internal support for the svg:filter element and corresponding CSS properties - that was what I asked volunteers to work on, not rendering. This work would be completely orthogonal to rendering but we can't get any filter support without it.

At least one Cairo person is here.
Any specific questions I should ask tomorrow?

It'll be done when someone implements it. Any volunteers?
(Bulia and I would both love to do it, but we just don't have time...)

O.K. I have checked out the source using svn and got it to compile and link. The user interface looks very polished (or does that mean 'old-fashioned'), but the current release may be missing signifcant functionality that is present in the xurrent Xara product range.
