I get a crash if you scale a shape too big with the modifier keys.

I think you'd get it regardless of the method of scaling. Actually that's a general problem - I remember seeing the same error several times, which indicates that NR simply does not guard against too big values. Please file a bug, and hopefully our numeric experts will have a look at it one day...
