I was sure I'd want at least 36 (360 degrees) and that I'd be happier to have 100, but I cannot imagine I'll ever need as much as 1024.
They do have their uses. Stars with hundreds of rays can give interesing texture effects, especially since we don't yet have blends. And randomization of such stars is even more interesting:

P.S. Bryce, could you please link the front page randomized stars announcement to this screenshot?

I don't doubt it. Most users find ways to use programs in ways the developers never imagined.
It is also important in cases like this to set sensible defaults, and to always test the upper and lower bounds for any side effects (which you did) so that the user cannot inadvertantly shoot themselves in the foot trying to create a million point star that will take and unreasonably amount of time.

Nice. Until I saw the screenshot I assumed the randomisation merely gave different variations of stars (different legths, roundings, angles etc) I didn't realise that it distorted things and made them non-symmetrical. The very abstract grey shape in the background with the dotted outline looks particularly interesting. I hope we will soon see people creating lots of abstract Desktop Wallpapers using Inkscape.

Also, there are so many ways to develop randomization to objects. What would really be great is to add some different types of randomization, like gaussian, formula, markov chain, etc.
Also, what about randomizing colors...etc.
