I worked in an engineering company where we did a lot of 3d cad work, but while the software was good at representing the parts extremely accurately, there was no way it could even come close to achieving the "magazine schematic" quality of that graphic; for this we always had 2d illustrators redraw it in illustration software, using the 3d renderings only as the base.
Today I imagine the ideal would be to use a program like blender, export as SVG, and then use inkscape to cleanup and beautify the end result.
In any case, while this car example is perhaps rather extreme, there's a vast range of simpler cases - floor plan layouts, woodworking diagrams, etc. etc. - that people could get good use out of it. :-)
