Hi,
Back in March I sent a mail [1] on changes on inkscape.org that probably should take place. Here is the updated list of proposed changes.
1. "Documentation" section:
1.1. "Translation" subsection should be a link to http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Translation_information
1.2. "Publications (Overviews)" subsection should be a link to http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/ArticlesAndPresentations
1.3. "Example SVG Files" subsection should be removed
1.4. "Tutorials" subsection should be renamed to "Official tutorials"
1.5. New "Contributed tutorials" subsection should appear and contain links to http://inkscapetutorials.wordpress.com/ and http://www.inkscapetutorials.com/
These new sites already list all available tutorials, so there is no need in a wiki page.
2. "Showcase" page should be removed and become a link to http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Galleries. The Galleries wiki page should be reorganized (more on this later)
3. "Status" page should be either removed completely or be updated automatically (November 15, 2005 doesn't sound like the project is alive :))
4. "Discussion" section should have a new "International communities" subsection and contain links to:
http://www.inkscapeforum.com/ (English) http://www.inkscape-forum.de (German) http://www.open-draw-community.de (German) http://twiki.softwarelivre.org/bin/view/InkscapeBrasil/WebHome (Brazil) http://www.linuxgraphic.org (French) http://www.linuxgraphics.ru (Russian)
If you know other local communities, please add them to the list
In an unbelievable case eveyone agrees :) would anyone volunteer to do this?

1.5. I wouldn't dump the wiki page just because other sites also offer lists of tutorials. Other sites are controlled by other people which means the Inkscape community can't directly control which tutorials appear and if the site will still be there tomorrow. If people prefer the other sites, great, but it would be nice to know the wiki will be there to fall back on.
2. I don't know that I would replace Showcase with the gallery wiki page. The gallery page is perhaps a little overwhelming for someone wanting to get a taste for what Inkscape does. A small selection of key works might help better sell the product.
I agree such a reorganization would be desirable. I can't volunteer to do it though :(

I agree the showcase section needs to be improved: stuff there is quite old now and, because of that, is not the best advertisement for Inkscape (the screenshots pages, in particular the one for 0.45, has a much stronger "wow" effect in my opinion). In addition the map demonstration is just one screenshot and the webdesign one is not in english even in the english version of the site. In fact, I think it would be better to have a single place for Inkscape "show off" (just as it is necessary to have a single place to contain or link to all Inkscape documentation). This would mean a single link on the front page to a page with screenshots, more elaborate (updated) usage stories and links to external galleries (with some sort of categorization). I would be in favor for a wiki page to hold all that because it would allow easier access to add new stuff and ensure the page is updated regularly enough to suit its purpose. This reduces the possibility for internationalization but none of these pages are translated currently anyway and much of the content will be very illustrated which should allow non english speakers to get the point (and the wow effect).
As a side note, if the wiki is to be relied more on (which seems to be the current rend) it would probably benefit from a small re-lift 1. to match the visual aspect of the website, 2. to be easier to read (font a bit smaller, page width reduced, better formatting of <code> blocks inside the page). I guess all this is just a bit of CSS work and, with access to the CSS for the main website, it should not be really difficult. Currently it feels a bit odd to be redirected to a wiki page from the main page.

Sorry about this, I did not saw that there was an Inkscape skin ot the wiki. This is the default but my settings retained the old behavior. It meets my greatest expectations!
Cheers,

Mine too, especially if all quirks will be fixed :)
Those I know about are:
- huge checkboxes - too small entry fields like the one to write comments to an edit

The Inkscape wiki skin is brand new as of (my) last night. Big huge giant thanks go to Ryan Lerch. As far as the bugs in the skin, blame me and tell Ryan. I made him give me a copy of the skin to put on the wiki before he was done with it. I'm sure he'll have an update coming soon.

yeah, send me the quirks... ill try to fix them...
i know the forms (ie text input) look kinda funky, as do some o the buttons....
the top images dont work on some of the weird special pages...
the inkscapewiki image @ topleft should also link back to the mainpage o teh wiki - ill get these fixed as soon as i can... :P
also there is a re-skin of the planet page in the pipeline too - id say im about 80% done on that...
cheers,

I second that, and I would also move this link to the bottom of screenshots page instead of top.

I just linked to http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/TutorialsAndHelp there, we can clean this up if needed.
These new sites already list all available tutorials, so there is no need in a wiki page.
I'd like to be able to update links even if one of the sites goes away, or if the maintainer is on vacation etc.
- "Showcase" page should be removed and become a link to

I have kept this since there seems to be room for discussion.

automatically (November 15, 2005 doesn't sound like the project is alive :))
Commented out so that it doesn't appear in the navigation box anymore.
- "Discussion" section should have a new "International communities"
subsection and contain links to:
I created a new wiki page http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/International_and_Local_Communities and linked to that.
Thanks for the suggestions. Translators now have something to do again :)
Cheers Colin

While we are at it, who is in charge for generating HTML versions of tutorials? All of the official tutorials are translated into Russian, but they are not online for some reason,

I was doing it for some time, but I would be happy if someone else took this task from me... it's easy!

I have done so now, but I only found tutorials for shapes and tips in SVN (we need the Docbook XML files). Please someone also provide the russian translations for the links in the table on http://inkscape.org/doc/index.php (or better yet, edit inkscape_web/doc/index-tutorials.inc directly).
Cheers Colin

This is interesting. I'll take a look why not all the rest tutorials are there.
