The current setup with "save as" seems a bit

clunky and I think is confusing to people coming to Inkscape for the first time. This is such a basic area that it should work easily and intuitively.

Please be more detailed. With the recent changes in this area, and with the differences between linux/windows, it's difficult to understand what you are referring to.
