I checked it out, built it (with no problems), and gave it a try. I really like it a lot. The original layout might be familiar to users who also use the Gimp, but I think this would be more amenable to desktop artists. IMHO, if this breaks nothing, it would be well to mainline this branch. Good job.

gimp 1.3 actually has the same style, so familiarity with gimp is not really a strong argument.

You are right! I just tried Gimp 1.3.22, and its menus are very much like this.
