This is the official notice to begin translation work for Inkscape 0.45. We are not yet string frozen, but we're very close. This is an early notice to start planning on updating translation work; another notice will be sent out once we are string frozen.
Adib: Can you notify all translators that we are nearly to string freeze? Thanks!

One specific thing that needs to happen on the release branch this time around is to re-enable the old PDF export, which seems to be the most functional at the moment since Cairo hasn't come through for us with a usable PDF backend.

If people are intersted in what needs to happen for cairo pdf backend to be "usable" or how to start working check this post by Carl Worth.

We're nearing the end of the Feature Freeze. Next step is to finalize all of the tutorials, documentation, etc. and achieve string freeze.
There are also still 19 critical bugs open.

Aaron and I think we're getting close to being ready to declare Hard Freeze and String Freeze, however there are a few questions first:
1. There has been some recent discussion about some string fixes needed to make the translations better. What is the status of this work? Can this be finished up within a day or two?
2. For committing translations during the Hard Freeze, Aaron and I would like to have an official Translations Integrator to handle committing of all the translation patches. Arpad, do you have time to take this role again this release? If not, then Cornelius, would you be willing to take the role?
3. Must-Fix bugs: While serious, I don't consider the remaining critical bugs to be complete show stoppers. If anyone disagrees, this is the time to raise red flags (and bug id's).
Instead, we're going to go ahead and plan on a 0.45.1 release in a few months to catch some of these issues.

this is not really a show stopper but I have discovered an annoying bug which may be really easy to fix: the font drop down list in the text toolbar does not stay on top (on Mac OS X at least, with GTK 2.10) it may be easy to fix because the font size drop down list in the same toolbar works like a charm so it might just be a matter of comparing these two pieces of code. this bug make the toolbar less useful and requires to open the text and font dialog. once again this is not a show stopper as the dialog is there as a fall back.

did it work in 0.44?

unfortunately they're done quite differently...
it appears I replied only to bulia last time so here is an update on the bug.

the problem is the same with 0.44.1 but seems in fact more complicated that just a not-on-top dialog. It looks like - on the first click the list opens but closes right afterwards. - on the second click the drop down button switches to another state: there is a dotted line following the border of the button. I don't know what it means. in this state the button is not responsive to any more clicks. - after clicking once on the canvas or waiting a bit (I don't know how much) the button becomes responsive again and the third click eventually opens the list. I don't know if all this is very clear so I've made a screencast to show the behavior. it's in quicktime format, with sorenson video codec and AAC audio codec (so very mac-ish, sorry about that) but is readable by VLC (and quicktime of course). I could not post it here so I made it available on my site: http://jo.irisson.free.fr/dropbox/inkscape/Inkscape_font_list_problem- screencast.mov
I have added this to the bug report and modified the title accordingly. It seems complicated and was already broken in 0.44 so it will probably stay that way for 0.45

I hope this helps.

Hi,
- For committing translations during the Hard Freeze, Aaron and I would like to have an official Translations Integrator to handle committing of all the translation patches. Arpad, do you have time to take this role again this release? If not, then Cornelius, would you be willing to take the role?
I am willing to get the role and I agree with Arpad that it would be good to be in that role together. Cheers cornelius
Aaron and I are ready at this time to declare the Hard Freeze for the 0.45 branch.
From this point until the release, please do not commit to the 0.45
release branch; all changes must be posted as patches to the patch tracker for review and integration by the release wardens (Aaron and I) or translation wardens (Arpad and Cornelius).
There are still a number of critical bugs that probably won't be fixed soon. However, we will plan on producing a 0.45.1 release at a later date where we can catch some of this.
I would also like at this time to declare String Freeze, to assist translators in finalizing their translations. If there are any remaining string issues such as non-translatable strings or fixes to existing strings, please send patches in ASAP.

Some very few entries of the Release notes are not filled. I thank the developers to do it to help updating the user manual for the release date.
