Kees,
I noticed you changed something in ocal import and decided to test it - but as of rev 17362 it does not work. Dialog and search work, previews work, but when I click Open nothing gets inserted into the document.

Hmmm. Is the OCAL import supposed to just do xlinks? That seems weird to me -- it results in importing PNGs and stuff some times. Regardless, I've fixed it up to track the tempfile name now. (I had accidentally overridden the myFilename variable.)
Thanks for catching that!

Thanks, now importing works - but no matter what I try I always get bitmaps imported. Is it that OCAL has so many bitmaps (I remember it had mostly vectors), or maybe something's wrong with the import?

Hi,
IMO the OCAL import function catches PNGs because it is by default the first file of an entry and it is used as the thumbnail. As you know OCAL is based on CCHOST which does not have an automatic thumbnail generator from SVG files (OCAL project lacks programmers to create such a feature), so it has been decided that in the meanwhile every uploader will upload a PNG along with the SVG and define the PNG to be the default file for the entry so ot is displayed as a thumbnail on the site.
BUT not all the entries have PNG thumbnails so in these cases the default file is SVG.
Examples: This entry has both PNG (default) http://openclipart.org/media/files/molumen/7379 This one has not http://openclipart.org/media/files/liftarn/7531 (the only and therefore default file here is SVG)
Also some entries have several version of the SVG (slightly corrected versions of the same file or just elements of a collection). Here are example: http://openclipart.org/media/files/molumen/3767 and http://openclipart.org/media/files/organick/1597
And in some rare cases, the entry can contain both PNG and SVG but the SVG comes ahead of the PNG and therefore the default file is SVG (these cases are very rare as we always keep an eye on new entries and correct them).
If the OCAL import function catches the first (default) file of an entry, it will in most of the cases catch the PNG thumbnails, not the SVG.
Molumen

Yes, what about only showing SVG entries from openclipart import in inkscape? I think that would be good...ppl. want the svgs...its ocal's main feature :) If agreeable, could we get that through for the upcoming inkscape release...thx for fixing btw...

Or, better yet, a way to filter filetype searches...ok, that is down the road probably... ;)

Agreed, when both PNG and SVG are available, it must select SVG and ignore the PNG. This is an important issue with one of the headline new features in 0.46, so it must be addressed.

a problem that I has the other day are entries like this: http://openclipart.org/media/files/Gerald_G/2593
Where one entry has more then one SVG.

Tobias, can you describe the problem more in Inkscape? Do you not get all the files? Let us know...

I only get the first (PNG) file and can't even see the other files.
Tobias

BTW, is the import from OCAL available on Windows too? I can't find it in 0.46 preview although there is a import/export tab in the preferences referring to that function...
