Hey guys!
After getting so much positive feedback on the draw tool icons I've created, I set out to redesign some other icons to go with them. The set is far from being complete, but it's a good start, and I still have some leftovers from an older theme I've created, that will allow me to easily go ahead with this theme. I'd be really thrilled if my icons would be included as standard theme.
Point is right now I'm Design Coordinator of ESTIEM ("European Students of Industrial Engineering and Management" an Europe-wide organization with abouts 40000 members -- must have mentioned it before). Their publishing and such has so far not been very professional and having worked in PR and layout since a few years (only voluntarily, though) I'm really glad to be able to provide my fellow Designers with a professional tool, that they can legally get for FREE!
So while Inkscape's functions are fantastic (ok, there are many, many things that have to improve, but still) I never really liked the icons. They are so grey, that only hardcore Gnome people will like them (don't get me wrong, I'm using Gnome myself!).
About the node editing being red (Josh was kinda disturbed by that): I created them to look like the draw icon so that one easily recognizes, what toolbar one is in.
Hope you like them!
David

Not disturbed... my personal preference is just for the blue-ish color... that all. It's more pleasing to _my_ eyes. ;)

Like them? I love them :) Although a few of them (ungroup, group and align/distribute) seem to be clipped on the toolbar (they're only partially shown). I'm using Inkscape 0.40 btw.
Can some of the developers have a look at that??? I optimized them for the menu size... if they are cut of in the toolbar, there obviously is something wrong.... toolbar and menu seem to draw a different clipping area of the icons.

Good news for you guys :) http://home.tu-clausthal.de/~dcb/icons.svg is updated. Really nice fill and stroke icons are included now.
Enjoy!
David
Wow, nice work. :-)

I have implemented the first cut at theming. It's basically just intelligent fallback. The paths searched are:
$HOME/.inkscape/icons/ICONNAME.svg $HOME/.inkscape/icons/icons.svg /usr/share/inkscape/icons/ICONNAME.svg /usr/share/inkscape/icons/icons.svg
(adjust for Win32...)
So I tossed David's icons.svg into ~/.inkscape/icons/, and loaded up inkscape. All his stuff appeared right along side the new XPM replacements that aren't in his file yet. Yay!
(for now, the ICONNAME.svg file still needs to have a group named ICONNAME for it to be loaded correctly.)
*happy clapping noises*
Please review my changes to src/widgets/icon.cpp... I worry about nasty STL brokenness. I'm still learning. :)
Now anyone can easily use whatever icon set they feel like! :)
Just a few more bits (some icons in view) available from:

not much but to keep you hanging on, and I've been out of house all day, so I didn't have the time, to do many so far.
btw: I can't seem to find the list of icons still needed, somebody (Bryce, was that you?) posted a while ago. Please give me and a subject or something, or just post it again in this thread, please.

I've created some zoom icons, but am not quite confident with them yet. On the other hand it's 3:40 in the morning and I can barely keep my eyes opened. I'd be glad if someone comes up with a nice idea for the zoom stuff.
Good night!

Hello David! Really nice work on the icons. I really like the idea to distinguish groups of icons in the top toolbox with color so that one can more easily see what tool he/she is using.
Since Inkscape tries to follow the Gnome Human Interface Guidelines, are you intrested in applying the icon section guidelines on your new icon set (http://developer.gnome.org/projects/gup/hig/2.0/icons.html)? The things that comes to mind is the black outline and the light source. I myself has a strong intrest in having a more hig-look for the icons (in the gnome-build anyway) and will probably redraw a bunch of them on myself on my own system if you choose to not follow the HIG and your set become the default one.
Speaking of icons, I had some thoughts about Inkscape and Gimps default theme. A lot of Gimps icons can be reused for Inkscape if they get svg-ized and it would probably be a great leap in usability for a graphic designer if both his/her photo manipulation software and vector drawing app shared the same icons. Adobe has a tradition of sharing the look of the tools in their suite and if Inkscape/Gimp/Scribus did the same it would be a good thing (yes, I know Scribus is a qt-app and probably wants to follow the kde-guidelines...but I belive something could be done to solve this).

do we need this???
fill_gradient.xpm \ fill_none.xpm \ fill_pattern.xpm \ fill_radial.xpm \ fill_solid.xpm \
They do exist.
join_bevel.xpm \ join_miter.xpm \ join_round.xpm \
properties_fill.xpm \ properties_layout.xpm \ properties_stroke.xpm \
what are these? isn't fill and layout what we already have for the dialog?

No, but it seems to be loaded by the application. That should be hunted down and removed.
fill_gradient.xpm \ fill_none.xpm \ fill_pattern.xpm \ fill_radial.xpm \ fill_solid.xpm \

They do, but again, the app seems to want to load them even though they're not being used.
properties_fill.xpm \ properties_layout.xpm \ properties_stroke.xpm \

I'm not sure. :) I compiled this list originally from error codes and later from removing unused (as in, no error) files from the icon list.
I haven't looked for where they're all used. I can hunt that down (and I'll fix the seemingly redundant use of the fill_*xpm's.
Hey Kees and all you others...
I just thought I might quickly create the join icons for the icons.svg. Unfortunately the it didn't work as expected. I thought I'd just create an object called "join_miter" and it would be recognized and rendered. What do I have to do?

Recode the image loading routines that use the old XPMs. ;)
I'm in the process of doing it, ran into some trouble with it, and I haven't had time to finish it up yet. (Though I should point out that the join_* and cap_* SVGs have already been created, check the list archives.)
