Here's my (no doubt slightly wrong) translation from the website blurb (which is unfortunately a little gushing; they do want to sell copies of the book, after all):
Vector graphics for everyone
Inkscape is the reference free software vector drawing program. Under Linux, Windows or MacOS X, it offers a broad array of functionalty that rivals that of Adobe Illustrator. Easy to use, compatible with many formats (PostScript, EPS, JPEG, PNG, Bitmap and TIFF), [Hmm, PDF is missing from that list] it's the ideal tool for the graphics professional and amateur alike. Liberate your drawings with Inkscape. Master the different tools to draw and combine live shapes. [Not sure if "formes vives" was a reference to the "liveness" (editability) of Inkscape shapes compared to illustrator, or whether it describes the artistic: striking, figuratively full of life.] Sketch with bézier curves and manipulate their nodes and control points. Apply colours from a colour palette, create a gradient and modify transparency. Optimize your workflow with clones, layers, grids and guides. Gimp Use"), from the same publisher.

FYI, you're right, "vive" is my translation for "live shape"
