Got 0.48 with 10.10 and now I can't add nodes to paths by double clicking.
Although I did finally work out how to work the pressure sensitivity dialog and turn my wacom on.
Have the node adding feature been removed?

I thought I ran into the same thing just a day or two ago, but in my case it was a spiro curve on the path that was the problem.
Do you have any live path effects on the path(s)?

No, the feature was not removed in Inkscape 0.48. If you didn't use the 'Spiro' mode to draw the path (in this case you have to double-click the (red) path outline, not the curve as rendered by the path effect), it could be possibly the same issue reported in
Bug #559140 “On canvas node adding doesnt work anymore”: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/559140
If it appears to be the same issue (tablet-related?), can you add details about your configuration and reopen the report? It was closed by the original reporter because apparently adding nodes worked again after resetting the preferences.
Otherwise it could also be related to
Bug #290870 “Regression: Curve dragging via Node Tool sometimes won't work”: https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/290870 AFAIU if dragging a segment with the mouse fails, it is also not possible to insert nodes by double-clicking (the cursor icon doesn't show the hand symbol you normally see when hovering the path outline).
