Hi all,
I am thinking about adding a view mode that shows the image in black&white. This is very convenient for preparing color figures that should also be nice when printed in b/w. I remember we had this view mode feature "Print colors", but it was removed. I cannot find what this feature did, and why it got deleted (I do remember there was a good reason to delete it). Do other people also think a "black and white" view mode would be nice to have?
Ciao, Johan
Very interesting idea indeed !
However, why not adding it as an export option too and synchronize view modes and export modes like this is very intuitively done in Xara ?
On the other hand there is also a very useful non antialiased view and export mode in Xara.

Hi Johan
That is a really fantastic idea. Never I was so exited about a feature proposal than this one, quite probable relevant for the majority of inkscape users and applicable for both professional and private drawings.

It's also useful for artists. Most recently this feature was requested by MyPaint users.

It was inconsistent implementation of an otherwise useful feature called "color separation preview".
Do other people also think a "black and white" view mode would be nice to have?
Yes.

Thanks for the motivating replies :-)
I have it working now for simple fills and strokes, and also for gradients. Working on other color stuff...
My question is: where should this be in the UI. I feel the view mode toggle (which is actually a "cycle") is becoming a bit crowded, or is that ok? Perhaps this view mode toggle would work better if it would toggle between Normal mode and the last used other mode. So then you could click "outline mode", and then toggle back and forth between normal and outline. Or click grayscale mode, and toggle between that and normal... What do you think?

What used to be a toggle was changed to cycle though all modes to address this bug report (in Inkscape 0.47):
Bug #238796 Display mode toggle needs update to all 3 modes https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/238796
See Jimmac's latest comment in the bug report for another assessment of the disadvantages of the 'cycling' behavior with 4 modes.
Personally, I settled with assigning keyboard shortcuts to normal and outline view modes to allow a 'pseudo-toggle' between e.g. outline and normal view (using two adjacent keys), or no-filter and normal (using 'toggle' once and switch back to normal view).
If new modes are added, I'd favor a solution to return to the 'toggle' behavior between normal and last used mode (while keeping the ability to map each mode to its own key using its verb).

I think we are doing it wrong :)
Let's see. Given that we shall have both greyscale/bw mode and color separation view mode, that gives us:
- precision modes (wireframe > no filters > normal) - color modes (bw, full, separation preview)
So why not have two cycling shortcuts for each of those groups? And separate them in menu?
Alexandre Prokoudine http://libregraphicsworld.org
Ok. Important remark ! I missed the fact that greyscale could be applied to "Normal" or to "No filters".

I think you are right Alexandre :-) Now I just need input on which shortcut key to use for grayscale then :P (please don't make it a numpad key)

Ok, I separated the grayscale "color display mode" from the other display modes, with a separate submenu and toggle. Now, which shortcut key can I assign to the toggle? I don't know much about all the shortcut keys or the logic behind it. So let me know which key I should take (if any).
Thanks, Johan
Is it normal that it doesn't work on bitmaps at the moment ?
