The program 'inkscape' received an X Window System error.

I recently got this error when it was trying to display a dasharray with too small dashes and failed. Try removing/renaming your ~/.inkscape/preferences.xml and run it again. Also this error is fixed in CVS since yesterday, update to the latest CVS and try again.

I assume this refers to the error where it crashes displaying the Fill&Stroke dialog. Your error with opening files is still a mystery. Please provide more information.
