Google Summer of Code (GSoC) 2016 - Call for mentors & help with ideas page
Hey all,
As you all know, we were not accepted as a mentoring organization for GSoC 2015. Part of the reason for this is that they have been getting more mentoring org submissions each year and really started to get tighter with enforcing existing guidelines that they had. Essentially, our ideas page was the big problem as we didn't follow their guidelines at http://en.flossmanuals.net/GSoCMentoring/making-your-ideas-page/
They specifically said "Each idea should have potential mentors, difficulty level, expected skills, etc. and none of those are listed on your ideas page." For people's reference the ideas section of our GSoC page is at http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Google_Summer_of_Code#Suggested_Idea...
The application period is still a about a month out, but one of the things we do need to get on sooner rather than later is getting people to volunteer to mentor so we can get the ideas section right by the time we actually apply. We also need to gauge how many interested devs we might have for mentoring this year so if you're interested, please reply saying so.

I am willing to mentor. I am particularly interested in mentoring SVG 2 text support and improving CSS support (style sheets).

I could mentor.
I have more experience on LPE work but open to other, anyway I dont want too complex projects because my skills and low time availability at this moment.
Can we also get ideas to fill it from no devs? We can create a one day/hour meet/brainstorm in #inkscape to this.

I am interested in mentoring. I can also write up some project ideas.
I think a good student project would be to introduce Inkscape::ObjectSet as a base class of Inkscape::Selection that's not tied to the UI, and change the internal data structure from a list to a Boost Multi Index container (similar to Java's LinkedHashSet).
Another idea is to write unit tests for Inkscape's object tree ("SP tree").

And optional but they suggest also for each idea:
* More detailed description * Related materials * Use cases
You're exactly right that we should probably narrow our advertised list down to 8 or 10 or whatever, and make sure they have the mentor, difficulty, etc. well defined.
I know in past GSoC we've had some issues with integration of projects after they were completed, so perhaps before narrowing our list down we should consider what type of projects make the most sense? What kinds have tended to be most beneficial to Inkscape? I'm wondering if perhaps performance-improvement and other projects that help retire technical debt might be more beneficial right now than, say, new UI functionality.

I try to explain the goal you dont undertand. Basicaly it works like:
1.- Put some guides over a item 2.- In the eraser toolbar there is a button cut-out from guides 3.- The selected item/s are cutted by the guides
¿Why use guides? * Exact position/angle of cut-out * Reposition of cut-out * Position cut-out stored and locked, you can lock the guides to avoid repositions
Maybe cut-out toolbar can have a option to make a item/s same place copy, giving some alpha and maybe locking it.
Could anyone put this goal, or put by me, and correct later?
Maybe is better "eraser tool" become to "cut tool" with a option to erase full objects.

Sorry dont undertand your previos request, dont read it carefuly :( We can... is about strokes, I want to convert strokes to paths retaining fills (2 items) to not continue with the stroke in the fill cut-out parts.

Just a quick couple of thoughts from a simple user's perspective. I'm not sure if this feature should be part of Eraser. There is at least 1 (and probably more than 1) feature request for a razor or knife type of tool, which would do this kind of slicing of lines/objects. Maybe better to create such a new tool?
However, improvements to Eraser would certainly be very welcomed :-) The biggest problem we see with the current Eraser tool, based on questions asked in forums /in my experience/ is when it's used on open paths, it closes the paths. (Users say "it adds more or new lines".) Although personally, on Windows 7, I can't make it erase open paths at all. I don't know if there are bug reports for that or not, but I guess there must be?

1.- Put some guides over a item 2.- In the eraser toolbar there is a button cut-out from guides 3.- The selected item/s are cutted by the guides
¿Why use guides?

- Position cut-out stored and locked, you can lock the guides to avoid

Maybe cut-out toolbar can have a option to make a item/s same place copy, giving some alpha and maybe locking it.
Could anyone put this goal, or put by me, and correct later?
Maybe is better "eraser tool" become to "cut tool" with a option to erase full objects.

There is a problem on open paths also in boolean operations, not only in potrace related code in eraser tool. If the proyect go on, we try to solve this open path problem.

For me, there is room for 1 or 2 more. But I understand there are different sizes and resolutions of screens. And maybe they don't fit for everyone.
If we go by this logic, does that mean Inkscape will not have any more new tools? All new features will be squeezed in with other tools? Or is there some solution on the horizon that I haven't heard about.
I've seen so many comments wishing for customizable toolboxes or control bars, but I've never looked for existing feature requests. But the user being able to re-order the tools would seems like a good solution for this. Or at least partial solution. Or, maybe the toolbox could be 2 columns wide someday? Or at least provide an option for it ?
Well anyway. It seems better to me, to have tools whose names give the user a clue what they do, than save space in the toolbox. And to make the Eraser into a slicing tool seems seems like planting a seed of confusion, which in the future will become harder and harder to resolve.
Although I certainly don't have any understanding of these things on a technical level. I was just asking so I could understand better.

Menu item sounds great. Two menu items: slice (need min two items) and slice from guides probably under the path bool operations. No toolbox icon.

Thanks looks good. I prefixed them P1, P2 to make the projects easier to spot.
Btw, on the cmake front, I'd be willing to serve as assistant/backup mentor on projects to do the Win32 or OSX cmake packaging work, if folks more familiar with those platforms could be lead mentor. If you're interested give me a ping and we can collaborate on writing up a suitable project description. I can describe the cmake work in general terms but don't know enough on the specific platform details.

Alternately this might make a good funded project.
(Did we still want to go through and rename "SP" to "Ink" or something else to move away from the sodipodi ancestry? If so, might be worth doing prior to or as part of this.)
This is somewhat low priority. I would be more interested in fixing namespace proliferation such as Inkscape::UI::View::View.
