If you are going to use the stock icons from OpenOffice I think it would be far better if you used the ellipse icon that doesn't have a segment sliced out of it (because the ellipse tool in inkscape cannot draw
shapes
like that yet).
It can and always could. Have you read the Help>Tutorial?

Read the manual? Users dont read manuals! ;) :P
But seriously I just read it now but that functionality is part of the Node Edit tool. (I figured I could always use difference to take a slice out of it if I wanted). I still think it is better not to use that Icon.
Idea: how about always showing that adjustement handle or showing it some other way? Why hide it until you turn on Node edit, I cannot help thinking of programs like Microsoft Powerpoint that have these nodes visible just after you first draw a shape?
I certainly think something could be done to help with discoverabilty.
