Icon Preview Feedback

Here is a guy making icons in Inkscape. He has a few beefs about icon preview. I think most are known, but I thought I'd post it anyway, just in case :)

Quoting that page:
It shows a preview of the current selection scaled to a few standard icon sizes, the largest being 48x48. (I also haven't figured out the purpose of the popup menu in the preview window, which doesn't seem to do anything). I'm not quite sure why it only shows the current selection; the only way I could figure out to get it to show the whole canvas was to create a dummy rectangle that matched the size of the canvas, and preview that. It's also not a live preview: you have to click "refresh" now and then.
-- Exactly what I was saying. Jon, do you have plans to make this more usable? I'm asking not because I personally need this feature, but because its level of incompleteness is certainly above the average that we have in Inkscape. I would love to see this resolved one way or the other.

Yup. It's going to get much nicer. There are a few things that will tune it up happy-happy, and I think once they're in you'll be quite satisfied with it.
I've left a comment on the persons blog, but if anyone hears from him directly, please point him on to me. I think his feedback could help make the feature even more useful.
The main problem at the moment is time and toolbars. I'm busy chasing stuff down to get the toolbars fixed. However, it turns out that I was very prudent to stop at the point I did, since the fix is going very deep and involved removing the use of SPButton altogether for the toolbars. I'm holding off checking any of that in, though, until it's at least as functional as the current stuff.

Howdy I have been also using Inkscape for a lot of icons lately and here's why I keep using a duplicate view instead of icon preview even if it takes a lot more screen estate and makes it only usable on an LCD:
* I need real time preview. While working on a zoomed-in canvas (finer curve control, pixel positioning at the current view level, etc.) I can check the perfect pixel positioning in the 1:1 view. * A single icon will not work for 16x16, 24x24, 32x32 and 48x48 as the preview makes me believe I can somehow tweak it to. I only want to pixel position for a single target resolution[1]. * Define some zoom ratio (no filtering) so the target raster is clearly visible even on a CRT. The current fixed way kinda works too, although I would prefer making it a bit bigger.
Maybe my needs are drastically different to those of your artist subject :), but I'd really fancy an icon preview window/dock that would be updated in real time and show the whole canvas (or optionally select a group id to render for your inkscape icon canvas case).
cheers
