Unfortunately the newest version and 0.5.4 aren't compatible on the API level, eg. they have the Parser class with different constructors defined. That's why we need the newest one and cannot support older versions.

As for the cairo-based import, is there something special to do to get it? I have cairo 1.4.6 and it works perfectly for the PDF export (I mean, as well as on other systems) but I don't have any PDF import in the Open/Import dialogs.

The cairo-based import also needs libpoppler and in addition to that the libpoppler-glib and the cairo-svg packages.
