Hi!
Just a little remark: The release note would be more attractive (and more fun to read) if it is illustrated by images of the apropriate feature.
I think many users (who dont have programming skills) are able to take screenshots, and complement the release note with it.
For example the new gradient tool is really better domentrate with an image as write down the functionality.
Best regards, Khiraly

Sure, see http://inkscape.org/screenshots/index.php

I did ask for screenshots, but the response wasn't exactly overwhelming...

Khiraly, would you be willing to invest some time into generating some screenshots for the screenshot page?
I think you're definitely right that including some screenshots in the release notes would make it much nicer to read. However, it's a bit too late to make changes; I just locked down the page this morning...
However...
Last release, I wrote an article that summarized the changes in prose form, and included some screenshots, that people really enjoyed seeing. Sadly, I won't have time to do that this time, but I would definitely encourage others to do this!
It's pretty straightforward to do, too: Just review the Release Notes page, play around with the features described, and make some screenshots, then write up a paragraph or so per item with your take on it. You don't have to cover everything in the release notes, just the features that you find most interesting. I think that around 1000 words and half a dozen images would make a good article.
You can get these write-ups published pretty easily, too, and get your name out in the press. :-) Newsforge, OSNews, Footsteps, and many other sites have been willing to publish articles on Inkscape, no prob. If you've never written an article for publication, I would really encourage you to do it; it's not too hard, and it's very gratifying to see your name in print, plus it _really_ help Inkscape a lot. :-)
It would be nice to see this time instead of one article summarizing everything, to have a series of short ones: one article on the new text features, one on the tile clones, one on extensions, etc.
Anyway, while I don't have time to write these myself, I would be more than happy to give guidance, contacts, editing assistance, etc. as needed.
